Overview

About Bayonne, United States

Bayonne, originally founded as a township from Bergen's territories, is located in Hudson County, New Jersey. Before the arrival of the Europeans, this city was occupied by the Lenni Lenape indians and over the years, the control went from the hands of the Netherlands to England. During the first years of the colony and the first century of the American Revolution, the first groups to arrive to Bayonne were English, British, and African, leaving their cultural, religious, and political influences in the community.

The name of this city is based on two theories, the first one assumes that it was named after the French city of Bayonne, by the French that established in the territory; and second one says that it is because the city is situated between two bays. Bayonne has a port and a cruise terminal, Cape Liberty, from where you can admire the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan’s skyline.

One of Bayonne's landmarks is Bayonne Bridge, the fourth-longest steel arch bridge in the world, which was built to communicate Bayonne with Port Richmond in NewYork. The American Institute for Steel Construction awarded it a prize for most beautiful steel-arch bridge.
