About Cabo Frio, Brazil

Cabo Frio is the largest city in Região dos Lagos, an area known for its fine sand dunes and beautiful beaches. This city is 155 kilometers (96 mi) north of Rio de Janeiro, in the Buzios Peninsula. This area was discovered by Amerigo Vespucci in 1503 and it was under French control until 1575, the year when the Cabo Frio War started. The city was founded in 1615 as Santa Helena, and then it changed its name to Nossa Senhora da Assunção de Cabo Frio. For many years, agriculture was the main economic activity, and nowadays tourism is the main economic driver.

Cabo Frio has several attractions, especially the beautiful white sand beaches and the turquoise sea. Praia do Forte is the most famous beach in town, where the fortress Forte de São Mateus, built between 1616 and 1620, is located. Nowadays, this is an area where artisans show their works.

There are several beaches in town, such as Praia da Brava, Praia de Peró, and Praia de Conchas. Cabo Frio has emblematic buildings like Casa de la Cultura, formerly known as Charitas, where the public library is set; and Pinacoteca José de Dome and Ponte Feliciano Sodré, a bridge open in 1926 to connect downtown with Da Gamboa neighborhood.

Rua dos Biquínis is a shopping area with over 70 fashion stores, where important fairs take place. As other Brazilian destinations, Cabo Frio has an intense nightlife, and every year thousands of visitors come to the carnival, which is one of the most important in Região dos Lagos.
